Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

Jana here with something I make every week in our home!  I have tried in the past to make 100% whole wheat sandwich bread from scratch, without a bread machine.  I had some success, but could never achieve a very high rise.  I wanted to make our sandwich bread if possible.  Not only is there a cost savings, but I like knowing the ingredients in the things I am eating.  Many store bought sandwich breads have high fructose corn syrup, which we try to avoid if possible.  I purchased a Panasonic bread maker about a year ago, and have been making our bread every week for several months now.  The bread maker I have does have a specific sandwich bread setting, which makes a larger loaf than some of the other settings.  I have been very pleased with the consistency of the machine, and would recommend it.

Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

3 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoon dry milk
1 1/2 tablespoon butter
1 1/2 tablespoon molasses
1 1/4 cup water
1 1/4 teaspoon dry yeast

1. Add the flour, salt, and dry milk to your bread machine.

2. Cut the butter into small(ish) pieces, adding those to the mixture.

3.  Mix the water and molasses in a separate container, making sure to mix well.  Pour into the bread machine.

4. Add the yeast where required.  (My machine has a separate area to add the yeast.  If yours doesn't, then add it with the other ingredients)

We really enjoy this bread!  It will usually last about 5-7 days before it goes bad, but we usually eat it in a shorter time frame than that anyway!

  1. Jana, could you tell me which panasonic machine you have? I sometimes bake bread, but I don't have a bread machine. I have been pretty pleased with the outcome of mine most of the time, but I figure a bread machine would be a lot easier and less time consuming.

  2. I have the Panasonic SD YD-250 machine.

It is currently $216, but I didn't pay nearly that much for it. I noticed they have a similar one for much less...might check out reviews for it? I love the convenience of taking 10 minutes to put in ingredients, and ending up with a healthy, yummy loaf of bread! (and a house that smells great!)
